ABSTRACT |
The interference of non-complexing organics for the adsorption of heavy metal ions - Zn2+ and Cd2+ - onto activated carbon has been investigated using homologous alcohols - methyl, ethyl, isopropyl, and isobutyl alcohol - as the non-complexing organic materials. The adsorption of both heavy metal ions was hindered in the presence of alcohols and the extent of hindrance was augmented as the amount of coexisting alcohols increased. Increase of the number of carbon atoms in the homologous alcohols provoked a decrease in adsorption. The adsorption of homologous alcohols in the absence of heavy metal ions was also examined and the adsorption percentage was observed to increase with the number of carbon atoms. The influence of non-complexing organics on the adsorption of heavy metal ions was explained conceptually by the disjoining pressure and among the comprising components of disjoining pressure hydration component, πhydration, was concluded to be responsible for the change in the adsorption behavior of heavy metal ions. Based on the results of disjoining pressure consideration, the hindrance in the adsorption of heavy metal ions by the coexisting non-complexing organics has been modelled. |
